This is a Manzanita Burl bowl I just finished. I have had it sitting around for a while now. Partly because it needed to dry out more and partly because I was a little scared of it,haha. This thing is full of bark inclusions and has some pretty serious checking.(Couldn’t see all that in the pic when I bought it). It ended up turning pretty nicely, i.e. it didn’t explode on the lathe. I plan on working with as many different burls as I can from now on. I love the wild grain and hidden surprises (irregularities) they have to offer. . This bowl is 6” in diameter and 3” tall. It is finished with Watco Butcher Block oil.

That is some wicked looking wood. I haven’t tried my hand at turning bowls yet nor have I tried working with burls yet. I can see your concern about giving that piece a shot. You definitely need to have some sharp tools for working that kind of wood.

I am looking at this bowl this morning, kinda wanting to put it back on the lathe. I turned the outside first then glued it to a waste block to turn the inside. I didn’t get it exactly center. You can see in the pics that one side is thicker than the other. I’m a little worried about putting it back on there and catching a chunk of it between my teeth, haha. I like my teeth and will prolly just call it done.
