Project Information

Made this as a birthday gift. The 3 pieces represent the 3 daughters who moved away to different places, have their own busy careers and are raising their own families. Inspite of this, they are very close and are always in touch, not only with their mother but with eachother. Its wonderful and its all the influence of their mother who truly holds them together and kepts them well balanced.
The wood is mahogany (1.5"x1.5"), wet sanded to 1000 grit then a light wax. The piece stand about 10" tall and is about 18" wide.

Very nice Stephen. I am certain Mom and daughters truly appreciate the thought and sentiment you put into this gift. As a Dad with two daughters I can relate. I would like to offer a comment, not a criticism. I would have preferred that you kept it all wooden by making the pivot point a dowel of either the same wood species or a contrasting one. Just my personal spin. I still love what you did. Good for you!

Great idea, I too would have used a wooden dowel, but it is still beautiful.

Some constructive criticism if you don't mind: replace the bolt with a wooden dowl, then it will be PERFECT!
Thanks for sharing!

Thank you all for your comments. Thats what I love about this site, I get great ideas and comments which I can use - so I never mind hearing them.
Lenny, Mike and Div, I see what your saying and to be honest, I didnt think of it as I was building it. Personally, I like the mix of metal and wood and in this case I wanted to use a steel bolt as the "metaphor" for the mom (ok ok I know it sounds a corny and there are a tone of jokes that one can make) not because she is cold but because of that strength and pivot point. Also, the bolt adds weight at the pivot point providing a counter balance when you move the 3 pieces around. I dont know that a wooden dowel would be heavy enough to provide such a counter balance.

Hi Stephen. You make a strong argument for the steel bolt. One could look at my line of thinking as one dimensional, wood, wood and more wood. You at least think outside of the box. The more I think about it, this is more a piece of art work than a typical woodworking project. I feel that either the bolt or a wooden dowel work as the metaphor you sought to convey. I say stick with your initial instinct. Thanks for opening my eyes a bit more.
