I found a video by a fellow named Jason Fiaschetti who is starting up Fiaschetti Woodworking. He has a website, is only 18 and has been woodworking for about 4.5 years. He won two prizes in the American Association of Woodturners finals in Las Vegas in 2017, one first place and best in show, and a second place, neither of which were the bowl I copied. He is a strong up and comer in the world of woodturning. He also does multiple furniture pieces, and is very, very good. Wish I was this good when I was 18.

I watched his video and decided to try my hand at what he called his “Tornado Bowl”. You can find the video under Tornado Bowl on YouTube and I have it listed at the end here.. Although he lets out some important information, I was able to figure it all out and this is the result.
My bowl is about 12” in diameter at the top, and 7” high.

I decided that the top and bottom needed to be one color, so mine has a solid purpleheart bottom, and a 16 segment top, with yellowheart inserts. His has no bottom or top distinction.
The other 23 layers are assorted woods, each one twisted in the typical twister bowl style that has been done by many excellent woodturners.

This is my effort, and I must say, it takes a while to let all the glue dry while putting up the layers, etc. I used a bowl press that I build in my effort, not wanting to tie up my lathe. I had the base attached to a faceplate and built up from there, so I could put the faceplate on the lathe to flatten the latest layer if it needed it with sandpaper or some scraping.

Overall, this project looks cool, but takes way too much time if you think in terms of sales. Although I like it a lot, I probably will stick it in one of the galleries I sell in, and try to get as much as possible and go from there.
True segmentation take a lot less time and to my eye, the effort can be just as steller.
To see the video that Fiaschetti produced, look here:
I think you’ll be amazed at how young this fellow is.

Thanks for lookin’!

Oh to be young again, only if I can keep my retirement. You made a real show piece also.

Almost looks like a Maryland flag. Cool bowl.
