The central section of this board is a piece of knotty #2 walnut that sat in my offcut box for a year or so. I had tried to resaw part of it for use as 1/4” panels in small cabinet doors, but the wood was too fragile for my planer. The nice figure you see on the front was countered by loose knots and holes on the other side. I filled the back with epoxy and stabilized the board with ipe bands on both sides.

Once cured, I hand planed the back as smooth as I could, then took a couple of light passes through the planer. To further strengthen the board, I laminated the back with a 1/4” piece of hard maple and planed the rest of the board flat.

I love the way it looks from the side—almost looks like two layers of white and dark chocolate. From a functional standpoint, it’s got a show side and a work side.

Quite unique design. I like contrasting coloured opposite surfaces.
