Rocking Horses

When I checked out the Rocking Horses category, I found (at least) 2 posts that used the same style that I have used (Family Traditions). I made quite a few of the large ones. Then I discovered that a miniature version was available, so I bought and built one. It was about Barbie Doll size. Kinda cute, but too small to ride and too big for the knicknack shelf. I took the pattern to a local print shop, and they enlarged the pattern (I think) 150%. The resulting rocking horse is a nice size for toddlers.

In the photos above, #1 is a side view of the 3 sizes; #2 is front view of the 3 sizes, #3 shows the 40 or so individual pieces of Oak required for one large horse, #4 shows how the rocker ends are reinforced with dowels, #5 shows the two large horses I made for a proud Grandmother, who didn’t want the kids to fight over who got to ride; and #6 shows my youngest grandson riding his medium size horse before he learned how to walk.

I’m convinced that kids are born with 4 instinctive abilities: #1 How to suckle, #2 How to holler, #3 How to fill their diapers, and #4 How to ride a Rocking Horse.

Great looking horses. Projects that all kids love, and made for all ages.
