Lockboxes for Christmas

I saw this project by MJR and decided to make them for Christmas presents this year. I faced the same challenges we all face when making presents for friends and family: how to make lots of them as efficiently as possible.

I started by making cherry and maple blanks, oversized so that the final product would be 3” square. I then cut all of the dovetails and slots on my router table and added the holes for the ball-bearing locking mechanism. The last operation was to cut the final shape on my table saw.

I used Danish Oil as the finish, waxed the sliding surfaces, and installed the adhesive-backed magnets in the holes. I personalized them by adding foam letters I purchased at Hobby Lobby.

They were a big hit, although about half the people I gave them to could not figure out how to open them!
