A few years back, my oldest sister took up taxidermy and natural gravitated to fish mounts as she loves painting. So, when I caught this 24” Black Drum I sent it right over and said if you can mount it I will make a base for it to go on. I wanted it to be swimming around pilings on a table top stand vs. wall hung, but had a hard time finding any reference material to go by.

The piling is made from a single 3.5”-4” dia. treated fence post. The longest piece is 22.5”, the next is 18”, and the shortest is 15”. They were carefully glued and clamped together in phases and wound up holding together very well. The bottom was then trued up on the belt sander to insure it sat flat on the table. The 3/8” rope was then wrapped around and held in place with hot glue.

This was supposed to be the end of the build however, the fish made it to front heavy. So, a base was needed.

I wanted a sandy beach feel so I decide on the light color of hickory for the frame and used a scrap piece of3/4” birch plywood for the insert and sized it to fit on top of my work file cabinet. The frame has mitered corners and a ribbit edge for the plywood to sit in. The pilings are screwed into the base from the underside in a position that looked pleasing rather than just centering it up. Lastly, six coats of general finishes Arm-R-Seal urethane satin topcoat was applied to the base only.

Threw in an old coke bottle that had barnacles on it and sediment inside it for an accent piece and called it done.

Thank you for stopping by and till next time take care.

Splash, this is much better than hanging on the wall. Good use of imagination.

Another good one Splash! Eat the shrimp! Don’t give it to the Dumb Fish!
