My dad is hard on a rocking handles, and I happened to have some white oak logs around, so split, shaped, and installed a new handle for him. If I had Hickory I would have used that, but I think this straight grained white oak will do OK. Installed with an oak wedge, and left the handle 1/4” proud of the head because I feel that it holds better that way.

I finished the handle with a couple coats of pure tung oil. I have had trouble with tung oil taking forever to cure in the past, but this time I put the handle in a make shift light bulb kiln (I had been using it to dry chair parts) after applying the tung oil, and it seemed like the heat made it cure a lot faster! Might do that again if I use tung oil.

Looks OK for being made from a log. I have some heads that can use handles. I need to decide whether to buy handles of go through making them.

Making a handle does require a bit of work, but I thought it was fun. And if you buy a handle you’ll still have to get out all the tools to fit the head to the handle. Plus pre-made handles are expensive! Split one from a log and all it costs you is the time you put in.

That looks very nice, I’ve tried to make a few from some hickory I have and my short patience coupled with my lack of experience with a spoke shave is doing me no favors. Watching Diresta and a while ago the Oregon cult leader guy on youtube has gotten me itching to keep at it, Lord knows I have enough heads that could stand to be rehandled.
