I needed to make a Bluetooth speaker for my shop and I started out with the idea of making a nice case with finger joint corners and great finish. I quickly realized that what I really needed was a box to hold the components and one that I would not worry about if it got beat up in the shop or garage. I also wanted one with a rechargeable battery in it. I am also not very electronics capable and so needed something that I could build. I watched a bunch of YouTube videos and read a lot of the projects on LJ. Unfortunately, many were focused on making the case and not very good shots of the electronics.

After reading and looking a bunch, I found the TDA7492P Bluetooth Amplifier and it came with a clear plastic case. There are quite a few suppliers on EBay and I picked one that was in the US and paid about $19 for it.

I purchased two 3” full range speakers from Parts-Express which are rated at 30 watts. Parts-Express is great to work with and they ship very quickly. For the speaker grill, I bought their cheap plastic grill with a metal wire mesh. I broke the wire mesh out and used them on the front of the speaker.

Lastly, I had to find a rechargeable battery pack and it had to be easy to use because I did not want to be taking it apart and re-wiring it as I had seen some do on YouTube. The TalentCell from Amazon was very easy to use and had a power splitter cable so you can plug it into the battery pack, the Bluetooth board and the power supply at the same time.

The box was made from ½” Auraco ply and a lock miter corner bit. The finish was very simple and just a Golden Oak stain followed by several coats of shellac.

Perhaps, it is not the prettiest Bluetooth speaker but it works very well and lots of volume for the shop or garage.

Nice work!

That has been on my to do list, the thing that has been putting me off is getting the parts. I even considered buying 1 and taking it apart. Thanks for the heads up.

Is that something you plug in to charge, and can use unplugged from the wall?

Yes, I used the Talentcell rechargeable battery and it will run quite awhile before needing to be charged. I struggled finding the rechargeable part but this works very well.

I have ever made a speaker by myself. Maybe this link is helpful for you.

Have your say...
