I’m a new woodworker. I have seen serval projects like this on lumberjocks before. So here is my own version.

From raw wood, Padauk and ash 4/4 , jointed, planed and cut to sizes.

The box is made using a table saw and a simple 45angle sled to cut each sides with a 45angle.

Glued the 6 pieces of the box using, benders corners, and some clamps. Note that i put some tape to prevent glue spill on the ash. that would become a total mess with the glue inside the box that can’t be cleaned until completely dry.

I cut 3/32 thick strips of padauk to simulate the ribbon around the box.

Then i glued the ribbon strips around the box excluding the bottom.

Cut all the loop using a scroll saw. (It is not easy to cut 1inch thick padauk). The loop were cut in a quater sawn piece of padauk so it show a stripped pattern on the ribbon.

When dry, I opened the closed box on the table saw. using a sled. With risers to hold the box in place with the ribbon.

Then i cut 4 sides 1/8 thick to fit inside of the box to raise a bevel to match and hold the top.

For finishing i used some shellac (I love shellac). Note the two first coats were put from spray shellac to prevent the padauk color from bleeding around on the ash. Ugly pinky mess avoided. (hard learned lesson). Then finished with 3 or 4 coats insisting on the padauk (To help keeping the red/orange color from fading to brown too quickly.)

The final touch, i used some red Flock It fibers to finish the inside of the box.

I pretty happy with them, i made in total 13 box with different types of wood, maple, and cherry.

I even made a plan on my blog

What you guys think ?

Hope that my English is understandable !

Both your English and your woodworking are excellent! I wish I made projects this impressive when I was new to the hobby. Well done!
