At Thanksgiving, my niece asked me to make her a pool ball rack, with the last name of her boyfriend on it.

I searched the Internet and this web site, and found where a previous Lumberjock had built one without lettering.

The other racks I saw on the Internet looked like the lettering was laser burned or engraved on the rack. Since I don’t own these tools, I decided to try hand lettering the rack. I did some experiments, and found that using 3/4” high Plump font style from Sketchup, was easier to hand paint…...and looks better…....versus some of the thinner stroke font styles. I have hand painted lettering before ranging from 3 inches high….....clear up to 60 inches tall on an old building advertising sign…......but never tried anything as small as 3/4” high.

I chose light colored maple for the rack sides, so black lettering would “pop” after the polyurethane was applied. I used dark walnut for the 3 corners. The sides are 5/16” thick maple, 1-1/4” tall.

The lettering is hand painted black enamel using a pointed small artist’s brush. I hand painted the letters on 1 side before I glued the rack together. I wanted to be able to place the rack side piece on a kitchen table, so I had the best posture and control for hand lettering (I think it would have been much tougher to hand paint the assembled rack).

For the hand lettering, I printed out the name on paper using Sketchup. I hand traced the letters onto the maple using a pencil and old-fashioned carbon paper. I hand lettered inside the pencil outline of the letters.

Now that’s a fine job. Never thought of making a ball rack. Well done.
