After a few years of my wife complaining about not having a mantel (especially around Christmas time), I finally completed one. I wanted something simple, but unique. I thought the diamond patterns and the cut off corners would complement the tile pattern on the floor. The internal structure consists of 2×4’s with a birch plywood covering. The finished mantel is just a few different pieces of molding I picked up at the local store. The rectangles and diamonds are also some simple pieces of molding attached to the plywood.

Very nicely done. You did a good job in making it look like a natural part of the room.

-- I've never seen a tree that I wouldn't like to repurpose into a project. I love the smell of wood in the morning - it smells like victory.
