I don’t think it looks out of proportion, your talking about the bottom shelf right? I would notice it more if you had a glass table top oppose to a solid top. I know what you mean by leftover lumber. I have a whole storage area with odds and ends where I should sort out one of these days and put the like species together. I find myself reaching for a whole board instead of hunting for the perfect size scrap.
Nice use of left over lumber.

Looks fine as is, but one idea might be to add a decorative curve to each end of the lower shelf. Maybe even repeat the curve on the top of the lower rails…

Not sure if you’ve anchored the bottom slats for the shelf yet?
If not, you might also consider spacing them out evenly to where you have a 1/2” gap, or whatever it would take, to give you even spaces, including on the ends.
Just a thought.

thanks jonathan but i dowelled them in already and then glued them up because i figured that i might as well glue everything up at the sametime you know. by the way should i be concerned with wood movement at this level?
