I saw a “weekend project” for a dog dish holder in Woodworker’s Journal, October 2017 issue. I had a couple days off from work so decided to give it a try. Since this was for outside in our garage I used some two-by-fours that I ripped down unlike the one in the magazine that used maple. The top pieces are joined with half lap joints. I didn’t use mortise and tenon joinery to attach the legs as called for in the plan. Instead I screwed the legs to the top within the halflap joints before I assembed the outer joints and then glued in a stretcher that I attached to the legs with pocket screws. Not the best idea but seems pretty sturdy. Added some poplar to the inside corners for some decoration and to hide the view of the pocket screw holes. I added some no-skid circles to the bottom of the legs and finished it with General Finishes Exterior 450. If the pups like it, I’ll likely try another for inside the house with better raw materials and do a better job with how I attach the legs.

Thanks. Found the halflap joints to be a great way to create the top frame. The magazine where I saw the plan showed this in maple and that looked really nice.

Thanks. The halflap joints made for an easy assembly and the result is a very strong joint.
