So my wife went on line and requested a night stand made of wood from a local person in the area stating he was a wood worker and could build a night stand, with stenciling and would look better than what she could get from any store.

After a month and a bunch of excuses he finally dropped his price he was going to charge her, and said it was ready for pick up. Now all this happened prior to me getting back into wood working. We drive over to get the night stand, and it was slapped together plywood, with butt joints, he told her how great it was, as we had to sit there and wait for 2 hours for him to finish it. Sorry wasnt it ready for pick up when you called, any ways we got it home I looked at it for about 5 minutes and said I can do better, a lot better. It was poor design and construction on his part.

So I decided I am getting back into wood working at that moment, and it has been something I enjoyed greatly in the past. So I looked over the dimensions, made a rough drawing on paper, and began to get the materials and cut them to the sizes I needed. The only thing my wife asked was if there was any way I could stencil the one I was building. Big Hello Kitty fan as you can tell in the pic.

I will have that night stand for a very long time now, as it was the very first thing I have built, and have plans on building one for myself in the future as I just have an old Walmart put together I bought years ago. Of course I plan on making at least one if not two secret compartments into mine. Sorry if the pic is side ways it wasn’t that way from the upload.

Nice story. Sure is nice to have control over the finished project. Hope you keep working with wood and enjoying the experience.

Don’t you remember “happy wife, happy life”?
She pushed you far enough to get you back to the shop, of course the poor workmanship helped too!
What did you do with the one that was built for you?

You did a nice job, no butt joints and a nice finish with the kitty stencil!
Are you glad to be back in the shop?

Yes, I am glad to be back in the shop, I find it relaxing, even when I am struggling or fighting with a project to get it to turn out the way I want.

Yes Happy Wife, Happy Life, and since I spend most of my day in my shop, she just pops her head out once in a while to make sure I haven’t cut anything off, or like that. The kids love it to, they get to watch, ask questions, and if it is a project for them, like an airplane I built for each of them, then they get to help to some extent.

Well back at it again today, spent all day yesterday building something for the shop, time to see if it was a wasted effort, or if it will work the way I built it to. Will post pics when I know it is good to go.
