This is a bowl I made as a gift, resting on a cutting board which was also a gift. The bowl is from a tree that blew down in a storm several years ago near Olympia, Wa. I bought the blank from a man who sources fallen trees and cuts them into bowl blanks. He stumbles upon some gorgeous material and sells it for an appealing price. The bowl now resides in Hermiston, Oregon with my Aunt and Uncle.

Nice looking bowl.
It is hard to see from the photo, what are the dimensions?
I enjoy working with big leaf maple and it is so readily available in the PNW. I literally have accumulated piles of potential bowl blanks in my barn. I don’t like the way the end grain tends to tear out, especially if the wood has started to spault (or decay) and gets soft, but the spaulting gives the wood some tremendous color and character.
