My HOA recently got underway, and one of the first items on the agenda was to build benches and tables for the common areas in the neighborhood. As I have made lots of noise with my tools for quite a while now, it was no secret that I build things. At the first HOA meeting, I was “nominated” to build the things that were needed. I began with a bench to be placed where some of the kids in the neighborhood wait for the bus.

Using Jay Bates’ free plan, I constructed this bench from 8 2×4s. I used glue and 2 1/2” screws to put it together.

Interestingly enough, I was initially excited about this project because I could use 2×4s that weren’t jointed and planed. I could just cut and construct. WRONG. I sanded for 2 days before I was satisfied that it was ready to paint.

For the remainder of the items on the list, I will absolutely use the planer and jointer. It is insane how much sanding jointing and planing save you.

Thanks for looking!
