I recently made my first bandsaw box for my son’s birthday. It was such a hit with the family that I decided to do another one for my Mother-in-Law’s birthday. We had a birthday party for her this past Saturday and she loved it so I’ll consider it successful ;-)
The design of the box is nothing new. In fact, I almost didn’t do this style because it has been done so many times. However, as pointed out by a friend of mine, even though I may have seen a dozen different examples, my MIL has never seen anything like it. So, it was unique to her and it was a pretty simple build so that was good enough.
The stock is Cherry. I have some 4×4 stock so I glued 2 pieces together and squared everything up. Final dimensions are about 14” tall x 3-3/4”deep x 7” wide. For the pulls, I had a scrap piece of Bolivian Rosewood that was about 3/8” square. I put it on the lathe and just turned knobs by eye that looked to be about the right size and all roughly the same shape. The drawers are flocked with wine colored flocking.
I learned a lot with the first box I made and learned another important lesson with this one… Don’t glue the kerfs back together after cutting the drawers out! Why? Because the back has been resawed off. If you glue the kerfs closed, the back doesn’t fit on right. Not a big problem but it did add a little extra work and made the glue line more visible than I would have liked.
All-in-all this was a pretty simple and fun build. It was definitely well received and will be used without a doubt. Thanks for looking! Comments and criticisms welcome as always.

Great looking build Kenny. I think bandsaw boxes are fun projects that can be created in a weekend. Not sure if you have seen the stuff that the “Drunken Woodworker” has done but he published a pretty neat book on bandsaw boxes. http://lumberjocks.com/DrunkenWoodworker/projects

Thanks Pooh. I saw a lot of the Drunken WW boxes when I was scoping out designs. Lots of good stuff!

Kenny that is awesome! I am going to be trying a bandsaw box soon, it’s probably my most under used tool in the shop.

This is so cool. Do you know of any videos out there that detail how to build this?

They’re a lot of fun Gary. Also lots of designs to pick from. I highly recommend giving it a shot!

That looks great. I’ve only made one (a prototype really) but I think they do make great gifts, and as you said, it may not seem unique to you but it will to your MIL!
One thing I don’t understand, with a multi-drawer box like this, is what DO you do with the kerfs?
Did you use some kind of filler?

I guess it varies from design-to-design and depends on who’s making it. The first one I did, didn’t have a back so it wasn’t an issue. I think most people just leave the kerfs open and either work them into the design or try to cut along a grain line so they’re not noticeable.

The couple I have made I have tried to stay ona grain lien as best as possible. This allows you to hide the kerf and then glue it back together and it hides it pretty well. The drawer will still fit since there is a kerf relief all the way around the box so it will all still fit together.
Also todd4390 the Drunken Wood Worker has a bunch of YouTube videos on bandsaw boxes to watch.

This is definitely pro looking. Well done buddy. I knew the MIL would like it. She probably had never seen anything like it before last Saturday.

I think the drunken woodworker wrote a bandsaw book actually. They sell it at Woodcraft and such.

How is the bandsaw your most under utilized tool in the shop? We need to get you away from cutting boards for a bit Gary. I have two I use all the time! You should start researching making round stuff on the bandsaw for bowl blanks. I can take pics of mine sometimes and show you. It’s definitely handy and helps before you turn rough stuff.
