I decided to make an entertainment unit that would house all of our media devices, so I found two designs that I liked on the internet and combined the looks and this is what came out.
It is made from a combination of oak plywood, oak hardwood, and a few pieces of birch that are not visible. The frosted “glass” is plexiglass that my dad had laying around his shop.
I designed the piece in AutoCAD, which I do for most of my designs, although I am looking to start designing using Inventor or Solidworks for future designs.
Since I HATE the staining/painting process (lack of patience), I decided to try staining and varathaning prior to assembly and I have to say, it worked great! I just taped any edges that would be glued. Most of the joints are biscuit-ed and a few Kreg-jig joints.
At the same time I designed a coffee table to match and have everything cut and ready to be stained and assembled, I just need to find the time.
Let me know what you think,
Jon

Nice work. I am so happy that we are trending away from those enormous entertainment centers of the ‘80s! I may copy your style real soon. My 18 year old tv (yeah, seriously!) just died this week , so I was forced to buy a new one last night. Now I need something to set it on!
