My latest carving “Butterfly Gourd ” topped with a carved wooden butterfly.
This gourd was so much fun to carve & paint. It also has to be the most colourful carving I’ve done.
Most of it is painted with acrylic but the blue and green on the butterflies was a trial using pastels.
I scrapped the soft pastel stick into a container then added a drop or three of water to the powder, mixing to a slurry. Both colours have a lovely glittery shimmer and I was hoping that it would show on the butterflies. However once I sprayed on the polyurethane it lost some of the sparkle but maintained the colour. Never mind, it was just a trial & it didn’t affect the overall appearance.
I applied a light gloss of poly to the entire gourd to seal the pastel mainly. Then masked off the flowers to do another coat of gloss just on the butterflies. As i wanted to highlight the butterflies.
Then appled a matt poly to the base & top. Bit fiddly but not as bad as it sounds.
The wooden butterfly was the most fiddly as it took me 4 attempts before it all came together. The first one I tried to carve was with chisels but i was a bit too forceful and it broke. The next two were just bad choice of wood. Lastly I decided to use the power tool, As you can be a lot softer while carving and thankfully it all came together. Finally I attached it to the gourd using a cut off screw to locate it securely.
Hope you like it.
