This box I made for my mother, she loves California redwoods. The outside of the box is entirely redwood, including the miter splines, with a slightly figured piece for the lid. The tray is maple, and the rails the tray sits on are padauk.
The redwood was bought at Home Depot, it’s the only wood beside pine, douglas fir, oak, and poplar I can get locally. It’s extremely soft and will dent if you even look at it funny. It takes penetrating oils very well, and some of the boards have a natural “shimmer” to them.
The finish is five coats of Formby’s High Gloss “tung” oil, followed by a coat of paste wax. This is probably my best box so far, though there are several mistakes, she loves it.
As always, any comments or critiques are welcomed. Thanks for looking.

Good job. I like the splined miters. The fabric you use is pretty cool. It looks like some kind of paisley design. Where did you get it?

Thanks for all the comments!
The felt inside does have sort of a paisley pattern. It came from a JoAnn’s Fabric & Craft store. My girlfriend shops there for her custom invitation/card business. I had her pick me up a variety of different pieces of felt, this is one of the ones she came back with. They had it in a couple different colors, plus some other patterns including alligator skin.

Looks very great…Nice combination of colors . I never have worked with redwood before since I dont normally see it her in southern Louisiana. Never seen it at Home Depot. Our local softwood is cypress. Someone gave me a very old piece of sinker cypress this morning and it is beautiful. Might end up as a box

Ditto to everything they said… I’ve got to ask though… You say your mother loves California Redwoods. How did she feel about you chopping one down to make her a [beautiful] box? ;)

Beatuiful box. The figured piece for the top, really adds a great look to it. I’m sure your mom will cherrish it for years..
