This shows my attempts to get the previous Tung oil finish off the floor. As the new finish failed to adhere after sanding down to 120 grit it was concluded that the oil still remained within the wood surface and caused the failure.

After sanding, washing with both solvent and mineral spirits the surface still remained embedded with oil. Flooding the surface a second time with MS and then scrubbing with a mirca pad shows clearly the oil residue on the pad, as well as when given a final wipe with a clean rag.

The floor will be thoroughly scrubbed all over with this method, as well as re-sanded lightly with 120 grit to give it some tooth. I will then attempt a test with #2 cut shellac (as suggested in the forum) and build a few coats with this method. I’ll then try a coat of varathane over this to see how the surface holds up after curing.

Photos to follow when I get there!
