I made this chalkboard out of standard 2×6’s from Home Depot. I ran them through the bandsaw “backwards” to get a rough sawn look – not the safest thing in the world to do, but I never once felt like I was in danger. Lightly sanded, and then stained.

The chalkboard is also from HD – it comes in 2×4 sheets, 1/4” thick. I laminated it to a 1/2” sheet of MDF to stiffen it up, and then nailed it into to the back of the “picture frame” There’s a recess cut in the back of the frame that the chalkboard fits into. Thanks for taking a look!

First time I’ve heard of running things backward through a bandsaw, it worked and does look rustic.

you don’t actually cut backwards. You rub the wood against the side of the blade pushing it from back to front. That allows the teeth to chew the wood up a little bit. Have to get the right angle to make it work right.

Very nice, Doug. At first I thought it was a flat screen TV in that frame!!
