I try to make a lot of my own dye using household chemicals. You can get some beautiful reddish colors from mahogany as well. Just put the shavings in a mason jar, add 3 tablespoon of lye to quart of water and dissolve it and add the shavings to the water. Actually, I do the reverse; add the lye water to the shavings. After 24 hours or so, extract the "juice". To intensify the color, leave the lid off. Have some vinegar handy in case you get any of this on your skin. It can cause severe burning.
