A professor in England is looking for a woodworker to build some wood models for a project he wants to do. He apparently Googled and found my woodworking web site, which includes many wood models. I am tied up until September on a city park renovation project I am leading.

If anyone is interested in helping the Professor on his project, here is a copy of the email he sent me:

Dear Mr Maley

My apologies for the unsolicited email, but I am a university lecturer in the UK with an interest in promoting children’s interest in how humans use machines in the world.

I am interested in pursuing some research in this area in the next 18 months and wanted to create a set of mechanisms for children to explore, as a way of provoking their curiosity. In pursuit of that, I intend to seeking funding to create such objects and so I need some quotes to have them constructed.

What I am after is a set of 6-8 different types of mechanism, ideally made of different coloured hardwoods and securely mounted on bases about 300mm x 200mm and standing no more than 300mm high.

At present I am having great difficulty in finding anyone in the UK to provide me with quotes, so if you know of anyone else doing this kind of work then I would greatly appreciate their contact details

For the proposed research I had the following mechanisms in mind but feel free to suggest others,

Universal joint
Lantern gear (windmills etc)
Chain Drive
Right angle gears
Worm gear
Rack and pinion
Watts steam engine

What I am seeking from you is a quote to supply and ship such objects to the UK. Ideally this quote would include some illustrative images to assist funders to understand my research proposal

The professor gave me permission to post his email on this web site…......

[email protected]

If you are interested in helping him on his project, please contact his directly using the email above.

I have a book of plans for building wooden machines. this would be fun, however i’m really limited with time. this is something i had planned on making for my nephews…

I think all the plans for the machines he wants are in there
