A good friend of mine called me recently and told me that he was putting in his paperwork to retire from the Air Force. Over the years I have done several projects for he and his wife at their house but this time he was asking for something special. He wanted to know if I would build his shadowbox; I told him I would be honored to. I asked what kind of wood he wanted and he said they had decided on walnut. He explained that they wanted a simple shadowbox but I told him that I do not do simple, it should be unique. I drew up some samples in Sketch-Up and the pictures above are the design he chose. Once everything was cut, glued, and fitting properly, I coated it with Danish Oil. This was my first project back in the workshop since being away from it for the past 2 1/2 years while I was completing my Bachelor’s Degree. As I explained in my Chisel Hammer project, this shadowbox fought me from beginning to end. However, all of that frustration went away when I received the texts from his wife and later from him, after his retirement, about how beautiful it turned out.

This is a fine shadow box. It has a lot of nice details and craftsmanship.
