First Try at a Pen

My friends son graduated from Drew University recently and I wanted to give him something I made myself. He’s an artist and is always asking me about my shop and what I’m up to there. I tell him I just make a lot of saw dust and mistakes and then once in a while things just seem to work out.

I’m actually not sure what species the pen blank wood is, as it came in a grab bag of blanks that were unlabeled. The box I threw together this afternoon after realizing the pen needed to be inside something when I presented it to him. The box is walnut. Both are finished with Waterlox and Staples Crystal Clear 211 Carnauba Paste Wax. Now if I can just figure out how to make grooves without getting burn marks I cannot remove. I tried different speeds on the router, taking shallow cuts and I almost eliminated them, but they still reared their ugly head.

Well hopefully he’ll like the pen and a little something in an envelop. He’ll need both. He’s going to be a papa in about a month.

I’d say that for a first try that looks like you’ve been doing it all yourr life.

First try? Looks very nice and like you been making them for years. Great job! My compliments on the presentation box also. Very fitting way to display this nice pen.

Thanks everyone. Christian was really touched by the idea that someone would make something by hand expressly for him as he’s done for others with his art. All in all, it was a good feeling to see him receive it so graciously. I told him, with the baby coming, he’ll need a good pen to take care of all the bills. lol

Ironically, I was seated at a table with a couple where the young guy was of all things, an aspiring furniture maker. He recently graduated with an industrial design degree, but having worked in a wood shop growing up, he felt drawn to those roots and experiences more so than mass production and line fabrication. So he’s opened his own woodworking studio. He said he’s struggling a bit, but he’s also going to be teaching woodworking near or in Philly. It was kind of a neat happenstance to be sitting with them and getting to discuss woodworking and tools. He said at age 13 he was handed a broom, but a year later they were teaching him how to sharpen and set irons. Now he’ll be doing the same for some other young apprentice.

Beautiful pen Bill and great box. I’m certain it was greatly appreciated by a fellow artist.
