This is just a simple box that I made to commemorate the graduation of my robotic surgery fellow this year. I will be giving it to him at the graduation ceremony.

The box is made of mahogany (solid for the sides and veneered for the top and bottom). The veneering was done using a vacuum press. It has a simple rabbited construction much like a humidor with quadrant hinges. The edge banding is Wenge and the lining is cherry with felt on the bottom. The lining is simply held in place by pressure so that it can be removed to change the felt should that be necessary in the future. The finish is just sprayed lacquer (about six coats buffed with steel wool).

The marquetry picture is inspired from the original patent drawings for the Intuitive DaVinci surgical robot, which is a tool that we use for much of our surgery and one that the fellow spends a lot of time mastering during his training. It depicts the surgeon sitting within the virtual reality console that he or she uses to control the effector robotic arms that are docked to the patient.

Thanks for looking. This was a very enjoyable small project to build.

The marquetry is realy impressive and detailed, even with such small dimensions.
