I helped a friend make this project last week. The real story here is the wood. I work on Marine Corps Base Quantico and a couple of years ago a big tree feel across one of the running trails at an awkward angle and they needed to remove it for safety reasons. They asked if anyone had a chainsaw and of course I was quick to volunteer. It was winter so there were no leaves or nuts to judge the species. But when I made the first cut and saw that beautiful Walnut I told them to not cut it into firewood size chunks unless they had to and to make sure everything was at least five feet long. The man in the picture did hike out one 45 pound chunk of Walnut about 16 inches long and 16 inches around. We turned a bowl with it and when he saw the wood he agreed we couldn’t let it go to waste. The problem was it was at the bottom of a very steep hill back in the woods. But we persisted and hauled out about 1,000 board feet. We took it to have it milled and while off loading it he miss stepped, fell backwards and hit his head hard on a 3/4 inch bolt. The ER doc said had it been an inch to the right he would have been dead. But it all worked out and he got this beautiful king-sized head board out of it and the Night stand on the next page. Tomorrow we are working on a 4 foot long 2 ft wide slab table and a fireplace mantel for him. More pictures to follow.

Love the background story on the headboard and this came out beautiful.

Love that walnut! I have a buddy in Tennessee who lives in the mountains and now and then he happens on a walnut tree deal which he saves for me. He says there are problems with some people who actually steal walnut trees right off the stump. In Tennessee they call that ‘rustling’ and shoot each other over it. A big walnut tree can be worth thousands. I have a nice stock of it now, along with some beautiful white ash which my buddy also watches out for on my behalf. I love those mountain hardwoods.

Very nice job on your headboard, and a keen eye you have on you too!

PS – From your haircut and lack of tattoos, I’d guess you are in the Corps?
