This end grain keyboard was made for my son the musician and music educator. I used the plan from the December 2016 WOOD magazine using maple, walnut end grain, and wenge veneer between the white keys. In an earlier version when I made the keys from two different boards they absorbed the finish differently, and some white maple keys were much darker than others. All of these maple keys were cut from the same board so there is less color variation.

Finally a piano that I can play!

That is really well done Jim. But it looks like long grain, am I wrong?

Jeff, at the end of each black/walnut key, there is a diamond shaped end piece cut from end grain. It gives much of the 3-D effect that the black keys are above the white keys. The rest of the white and black keys are long grain. I uploaded another photo that may illustrate the effect of the keys.

Have your say...
