Guitar #5 – the SapeleTele I’m christening “Honeybee” for it’s black and gold burl cap.
This is my seco semi-hollow electric and first body cut entirely on the CNC machine. The neck is hand-carved maple with a birdseye fretboard and features Abalone fret markers of my own design. I’m planning to re-use the fret marker design on future instruments.

The specs..
Body: Sapele base with Maple Burl cap; black binding on top of body and sound holes.
Neck: Maple, hand carved profile; 25.5” scale length
Fingerboard: Birdseye Maple with Abalone fret markers
Finish: Black/Yellow/Red dye with hand-rubbed high gloss Tung Oil top coats
Pickups: Fender N3 Noiseless

I’ve been playing this one for a few weeks now and, as usual, it’s now my new favorite!

Hope you like it!

What type of tone are you getting front the Sapele? I don’t think I have ever heard a guitar made from this wood. I must agree with the previous post that if it sounds anything like it looks it will be amazing!
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, all! I’m loving the way it sounds and plays. It’s definitely a learning process, but they’re getting better one guitar at a time.
Chem – Sapele is basically same as Mahogany and (not that it really matters) can be seen in commercial guitars (
For acoustic guitars, I’ve never personally tested the tone. Taylor calls it ‘balanced.’
For electric guitars, I’m squarely in the camp of the tone from an electric being almost entirely a function of the pickups and outboard gear (pedals, amp, cables, etc.). Perhaps it has an effect on the overall sustain, but the electronics that pick up magnetic field changes aren’t directly impacted by acoustic properties of the resonator.

Thanks for the comments!

Dude! That is one AWESOME! guitar. I didn’t even look at your craftsmanship that must have went into building the guitar because I can’t stop looking at the burl wood.

Yeah, I bought several burl tops off Ebay last year. I get many comments about the top, with folks asking me how I made the pattern…and I answer “nature.” :)
