I built this bed in the spring and summer of 2016. I’d wanted to build a bed for quite a while, but never had the combination of time, money, materials, and shop space to make it happen until last year. I love how it turned out, and more importantly, so does my wife.

The bed is mostly cherry, with walnut veneered plywood panels in the headboard and maple slats. I absolutely love the way the panels look. The wife and I spent a good half hour deciding exactly what part and which side of the panels we wanted to see, and I’d extremely happy with the results.

You can read about the process of making the bed in my blog series describing the bed project.

I’d love to hear any feedback about the design, construction, or anything else in the comments.

My favorite quote of the project: “there’s a bed in our basement!”

Very nice!

This looks like a modification of The Wood Whisperer's cherry/walnut bed. Did you draw inspiration from it, or build it separately? I just started this bed build so I’m going to go read your blog for suggestions/lessons learned so my build will go better. Your bed looks great!

I did indeed draw some design inspiration from Marc’s bed build, though I had the bare bones of it in Sketchup before that video came out. I liked his design but thought it was too complicated and a bit busy, so I simplified it a lot. He also was basically building a decorative frame for a free standing bed, which I obviously wasn’t doing.

I’m happy to answer any specific questions you have as you go along. Feel free to PM me and I’ll send you my email address.

I like the simplicity of the design. Very attractive.
