A very dear friend of mine called Kim has had a long association with a red star design. I first saw it in a mozaic she has (2nd picture). RedStarKim is also her twitter address and there is a tattoo of the red star on her arm (pic 3). Recently she commissioned me to make her a box using this design.
The above is the result. Based on the large, black outlined, red star in the mosaic the star is Padauk with an Ebony outline (3mm thick). This is set in a Sycamore background. The box is Ebony, mitred corners, with
a drop-on lid and measures approx 96mm x 94mm x 50 mm .
Making the star was the trickiest part but then I do like a challenge.

Very well done and beautiful Martyn. Kim has got to like that a lot. Please tell her that I think the design of that mosaic is very very special. I’m not knowledgeable enough to explain the reason, but I just know it is. I guess the word “art” plays a big part there.

Beautiful Martyn. A 3-D effect, and the ebony border really sets it off. If I may be crass, what do you charge a friend for a commissioned box with this much effort in? I’ve had a request from a neighbor to carve an elephant, “any elephant” and I am clueless as to what to quote for it. If you’d share a ball-park idea with us, I’d sure appreciate it.

Thank you all again for your very positive feedback. Feedback by people who know what they are talking about because they do it themselves. Joining this community has been one of the best things I have ever done. I have felt my self confidence grow over the weeks that I have posted. This is a fine place to be.

Another absolutely beautiful piece of art!
Love the design, wood combination and for sure, the amazing craftsmanship!
The combination of the woods/colors really do make that star “pop” !
I am sure that Kim will enjoy this to the fullest.
