Our pastor asked me to build a cross after seeing my iPad stand. He wanted the same woods so this is Curly Maple and Walnut and the overall height is 9’. The rock is all wood and weighs 70 pounds. The cross has a monocoque frame with bulkheads, similar to an airplane fuselage or wing or even some race cars. It is light but strong. Finished in Nitrocellulose semi-gloss lacquer and glued entirely. The Curly Maple and Walnut panels remain full floating so they shouldn’t split with humidity and temperature changes. The cross can be lifted out and rotated to show the Walnut side if desired.
