Clock in the Oval

One of my latest projects. A gift from one of my nieces to another. Request was a clock with their brands and the family initial. Was up to me to design it. Had some small pieces of ash that was headed to the fire if they did not find a home. Glued up enough pieces to get the size and then the fun started. Was going to be a rectangle but I did not have enough good pieces so it became an oval. It is 24” long, 14” high and 1 1/2” thick.

Burned the clock face, brands and initial with the laser. Wanted the brands deep to look like they were actually branded in the wood. Added the back pieces to make room for the clock movement and some depth compared to most clocks I found on the internet. Inlayed 3/8” walnut strip around the outside for a little extra effect. Was planning on keyhole slots for hanging but had the cutoff piece laying on the bench and thought a french cleat on the round would be neat. Only about a 22deg. angle but it works well and allows for easy positioning to get it level. Finish is a light stain with several coats of semi gloss lacquer and a battery operated clock movement.

Thanks for looking and as always all comments, questions and opinions are welcome.

Beautiful work, Mark. Really like that finish, too.

Love all the knots in this piece, Mark! Lots of great details, the oval shape, the walnut, the stand off… Thanks for sharing.

That’s a great looking piece. It’s got a lot of character for certain.

Kool klock, Mark. Very unique. It all looks good, and the finish is great, but I especially like the walnut rim banding. Nice touch, that.

Thanks for the compliments. I usually shy away from wood with that many big knots but it wanted to be something. I am happy with the results as are the recipients.

No problem Bob just stop anytime you are ready.
