This is Cathy’s first turning. She told me she thought she might like to try some turning. I told her get in the shop. We started about 7:00 last night and finished about mid-night. It was kinda slow but I took my time with her. I didn’t want her to get scared of the lathe. She had very few catches and did a good job of it. She told me when we went to bed all she could think about was pull the handle to you ,push it away , don’t push it to the wood so hard, let the wood cone to you. I think she had a good time. Cathy kept telling me but I’m girl. So this morning I got out my latest copy of Woodturning Design and showed her the back cover. I told her Cindy Drozda is a girl to and look at her work. Any way Cathy is going to take it to work tomorrow. A lady she works with is into crafts she makes stained glass. It did alot to give Cathy confidence and perk her up. I tryed to show it in the pictures it has alittle burl in it. I never get any burl and she get it on the first turning. She did the hollowing, ruffing out, shaping and finishing. I only helped by smoothing if she got to deep and some of the harder things. It is 3” H x 3” W 1 1/2 ” D the base is 2 3/4 W. So here it is

She did a good job, and it sounds like she’s got a good teacher.

GO CATHY What’s this crap about being a girl? Go to my gallery and tell me women can’t turn. Let Gar help you understand the lathe, and the tools and how to hold them & use them. Then go to the shop ALONE and teach yourself. get on internet and watch every video you can (assuming you have the ability to get high speed internet) YOU CAN DO IT GOOD LUCK CATHY I want to see your progress as you fall victim to the turning addiction

Nice job Cathy. The first is always the most special. I’m sure we will see much more now.
You may relax now!

Thanks
