Seahorse Box

I recently moved from Ohio to South Carolina and my dear friends wife was looking for a recipe box. They moved here two years ago and asked me if I still did woodworking. I said “if I can borrow your garage to work in I will make you one”. Well here is the finished product.

It’s oak to match their kitchen with walnut splines. It matches another box I gave here when they helped me move.

I added the measurement converter for her. Then I thought… heck, that would work to hold a magnet. The 105 degree stop hinge keeps the lid at the right angle and she can use the magnet to hold the card in place up high while she is baking. I added a matching pen so that it would be handy. The pen is also magnetic (I added one) to be tucked away in the lid when closed.

She loves seahorses so I had to get someone with a laser engraver to carve the seahorse for me. I wish I knew how to carve.

The last picture is before hiding the imperfections and applying the finish.

I finished it with three coats of poly.

As a part time chef, I can certainly see the value and beauty in this. Well Done!

Beautiful box and very well organized recipes. Seahorse turned great, same result I would probably make burning wood since I don’t have laser.
