This is a veneer hammer I made for Bondo in the “Surprise Tool Swap”

Here is the letter I sent with it:

Bondogaposis,

A while back I did a project at work that utilized some 5/8”x 3-1/2” x ¼” (approx. measures) brass pieces as decorative elements in a floor at Crystals Mall – City Center, Las Vegas. I had a few left over and thought that they would be perfect as a blade for a veneer hammer.

I made one for myself out of some left over cherry scraps and liked it very much, but thought I made the handle a little long. With this in mind, I proceed to make this hammer with a little shorter handle. I think this one is a little short for my liking, but hopefully it will work ok for you.

The wood is Cocobolo. The handle is through morticed with a round tenon, and pinned with a 3/16” brass dowel. It should never come apart. The brass blade was a press fit, and I also applied a little dab of hide glue in the slot. A little heat and effort and the blade should be removable. I have included a couple of pieces of the brass I used for the blade just in case you want to change it or make another. I filed and sanded the blade edge at 45 degrees on each side, and then slightly rounded the edge. The ends of the blade are also relieved so it won’t catch and tear the veneer as you hammer. You may want to round it some more to suit your preference.

The finish is some dark Danish oil, a few coats of shellac, and then waxed with dark Liberon and 0000 steel wool.

As this was a surprise swap, I wanted to make something a little different. I am not sure that you do any hammer veneering. If not, maybe this will be an incentive to give it a try.

Your LJ friend,

Paul

Wonderful work Paul. I particularly like the detail of the three brass pins on the backside of the hammer.

Having never used a veneer hammer before, I wasn’t sure what to think of this offering. After seeing what a veneer hammer is and how a veneer hammer is used and how many variations are available, I must say this is a beautiful and useful piece. Well done. It seems it would serve it’s new owner well and be a cherished piece. GREAT JOB and thanks for educating me.

Cool hammer, Paul. Out of the box for dure. I love that you used recycled elements. Looks like the fit and finish are top notch.
