Most of the time when I am working on a commission I have the client dictating certain aspects of the build. For this project I received a grant and had complete autonomy with the design.
It is made from Black Walnut and has typical Maloof style joinery with ebony plugs over the mechanical fasteners. It has two seats with black vinyl upholstered slip cushions. The finish is minwax wipe on satin ploy followed by a home made beeswax and oil mix.
Now a major motion picture….on youtube ;)

This is such an outstanding piece and so nicely done. It’s actually quite striking.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. This community has been a pleasure to be part of and I wish I had more time to chat with you all. To answer the question I think I have about between 120-180 hours on this bench, it was a side job so done mostly in off hours. It was something I had wanted to do for quite a few years, but our library board was against art in the library. Just this last year the head of the board retired and they changed their view on it and I was able to put something in.

Great job, Brian! Lovely design with beautiful execution and the hand carving takes it over the top.

That’s a sweet bench, well done. I don’t think I could make one nearly as nice.
