THE ASHES

This is a wooden replica of THE ASHES pottery urn which is used as a cricket trophy between UK and Australia only, for more than a century. There were uncertain stories behind it and how this little urn became so important to both countries that it was about to start a war between them… well..sport war.
One story claimed that when the English lost the game for the first time to Australia, they thought it was the death of cricket in their country, so they cremated a cricket ball and kept its ashes in that urn.
Here is what is writen on that piece of paper when the Australians won the game a century ago:

When Ivo goes back with the urn, the urn,
Studds, Steel, Read and Tylecote return, return,
The Welkin will ring loud,
The great crowd will feel proud,
Seeing Barlow and Batee with the urn, the urn,
And the rest coming home with the urn.

My urn is made of red gum and the same size of the original. ( picture 1 )
picture 2 shows you the original urn and the size, compared with the cricketer’s hand and that how I worked it out.

Well it’s a nice urn, a little unusual story, but that’s the English for you.

Very nice replica. Got to love those sensitive British. An urn for a cricket ball that’s great.

Sam, maybe you & I could wiz over to the UK & swap it for the real one. Since they never let us keep them even when we’ve won them more times than not. LOL

Lovely work Sam, much better than the daft game it represents. (US readers : it takes a week to play and often ends in a draw) I prefer sensible, action-packed sports like Tossing The Caber

Notottoman, never seen that explanation before but you sure bowled me over with it.
Do you think Gerard is a bit of a Tosser. Taber Tosser that is. LOL. No offence meant but could not resist that one Gerard.

I did not expect to turn my home page into a sport battle field between Pommies, Aussies AND Yankies as well.
My poor urn lost ground and got only slight attention. But I loved what I’ve, accidently, created. I was left LOL evreytime I read a new comment.
To Cher, I’m a football (Soccer) fan all my life and inspite I live in Australia for more than 36 years I still dont fully understand cricket, but as an Aussie I support and watch them, in all sport, with whom they are playing, pommies, Indians, Pakies or S. Africans.
Thanks to all anyway.

By the way, the bangle and ring are very nice but too cheep to be for wife. I think she will pretend having headache for a month or two.
