This kitchen is basic face frame on melamine. I used vinyl base and then randomly sanded the edges for that antique look. It was extremely easy to do this finish, I was impressed.

Doors/Facing: Alder
Finish: Vinyl Base + 2 coats water base clear coat.
Carcass: 5/8” melamine

My wife and I have been looking at craft and antique stores lately and I have seen alot of finishes like this. I wish I knew ho to do it. I know I could build that cabinets and such. One of the stores was a consignment store and she will sell the items for me, but I need to know how to finish them this way. Can you elaborate on the technique? Very nice looking by the way

Vinyl base coat is a solvent base much like laquer, but this is much thicker so I found it was best sprayed out of a conventional gun. I get it by the gallon from a local woodworking supply store for around $40/gal. They use Valspar colors (here).
So you’ll want to make sure your cabinets are as smooth as possible and debris free when you spray and you’ll do about two real good coats on. After you let it dry it should be a solid color and you shouldn’t really be able to see the grain behind it. Then put one coat of lacquer (I use Sherwood Chem Aqua Lacquer) on after it. If you so desire you can antique it a bit by randomly sanding down the corners of the doors like I did or just leave it solid. Then put your last coat of finish on and your good.

I hope this helps!
