I’ve been teaching my grandson to turn segmented bowls. I had him make and turn a small bowl first and he did great, so he wanted to make a bowl for the local youth fair. The bowl is made from Maple and Purple Heart. The finish is 4 coats of shellac then 4 coats of Cap’n Eddie’s shine juice mixture. The combination turned out great. The finished bowl looks better in person then the pictures show. Fair starts next week and his bowl is a winner in my book, we will see what the judges think by next Thursday.
edit: I added a picture of his first bowl to the gallery.

Well done. Looks great for a second bowl effort. I’ll bet both of you had a great time with this project. The bowl will likely be passed on to his grand kids. And lets hope he can share the experience with them.

Great looking bowl. How old is your grandson? Hopefully he wins a prize for his hard work.

Grandson just turned 15. He is in 4H and I have been teaching him woodworking now for 5 years. His projects usually do very well at the fair. He has a market steer, sheep and team metal gate build plus the bowls for competition this year. He is getting pretty good in the wood and metal shop.
Thanks for all the kind comments.

Thanks for the comments. We are both proud of his efforts. Sorry for the sideways picture, sent it from the phone.
