Wow, that is some gorgeous wood and a great finish!
Even after a careful setup for those fingers, I’d still have hesitated to being on that Walnut.

Did you sand away the Gloss and spray with semi gloss?
Whatever you did, it looks GREAT!!

That is SOOOO nice Mike. Maybe when I open the non profit this year you can come and teach it sometime. :)
I have a turned box in the same wood but not as nice but with a curly maple top

Mike, it was a bit a challenge, but you persevered and ended up with a beautiful box. Thanks for sharing.

Great box Mike, you have mastered the box joints and really made that grain pop!

Thanks folks! I did sweat some bullets while making this as the wood did cost a pretty penny… ;-)

Where did you find the wood?

I found the Claro Walnut at my local WC. They had an entire pallet of this stuff and I was about the first to have a chance to pick it over. $8lb. not cheap, but spent over an hour carefully stacking and re-stacking the pallet as I picked out one at a time. In other words, I got the best of the best in that pallet.
I just made sure that each piece was at least 12in and not much over (didn’t want waste). So basically the box size was dictated by the size of stock purchase. I did screw up on one 5×6 piece when I got a kick-back in the gut. Ouch! Other than that, I just took my time finishing (with Joe’s advice).
