I had a cracked slab that’s been sitting in the shop for about two years now. When my grandma asked me if I would build her a small entry table, this slab immediately came to mind. She wanted something light enough to move by herself so I used pine for the frame. I know, I know, I know, it’s pine. I’m not going to argue with my grandma though. I will never be big enough or old enough to sway her decisions. The table design is one that I’ve been infatuated with for quite some time. I used my brand new taper jig from Peachtree woodworking (metal frame with a small handle and angle guage). DON’T USE THIS. It changes the angle with the slightest pressure and is very flimsy. I’m either building a new one or buying a nice one from Rockler. After making the tapered legs, and not dying, I did my first mortise and tenon joints on all the frame pieces. Yeah, I need better chisels. The butterfly keys on top were also a first. At least without jigs. There was some tearout around the lines which I believe was due to it being softer wood and crappy chisels. All in all though, I really love the table. The top is elevated just over an inch to have the floating look. The stain isn’t my choice of color, but it turned out ok for what grandma requested.

I know this isn’t the most exciting build, but it has probably been my favorite. My grandma has done more for me than I could explain, so it’s been awesome knowing I can finally do something for her that no one else in the family can.

Thanks for looking everyone!

Beautiful piece and to make your grandmother happy is icing on the cake. Essentially everything I build is given away to family, friends, or charity and its a good feeling. Well done.
