My daughter and fiance (finally !!!!) moved into an apartment downtown. Their kitchen is old-style apartment small, and had an unused nook on a wall. Tight spaces abhor a vacuum, so I made them 4 floating shelves. The tops and bottoms of the boxes are 1/8” sanded ply, and the sides are 1/4” x 2” pine. Total shelf depth is 5” (to fit behind door molding). Cleats are 1.5” x 1.5” pine, with 5 “legs” jutting out at right angles to form a tortion box that tightly holds the boxes on. Had to use very dark stain (ended up with “black cherry”) because of profoundly different staining properties in plywood and sides of boxes
