This is a king sized bed frame that I designed in SketchUp and made with an Oak frame and Sapele panels. There is drawers for storage underneath the mattress and at the head of the bed in place of a drawer I left it open as a cubby. This easily accessible storage has an LED light and outlet with USB charging ports. The Oak was finished by using the Japanese finishing technique of Shou Sugi Ban. This is where the wood is burnt and then a oil finish is applied. The panels are made up of 1/4 inch Sapele in a herringbone pattern on a 1/2 inch plywood backer.

That is a beautiful project, from design inception to completion. Truly a wonderful project with great results.

Beautiful and very attractive design. The deep dark color against the Sapele goes so well together. Eye popping beautiful work!

Beautiful design and execution. Oak looks very textured. How did you build the drawer section to support the mattress?

What an awesome design! I might have to borrow some of these elements.

There are two large boxes made out of 3/4 plywood on either side of the bed that are divided into the three sections for the drawers and cubby. I think put on a oak faceframe and flush mounted the drawers.

The burnt texture of Shou Sugi Ban is very interesting. Thanks for sharing this. Every once in a while something shows up on LJs that opens the door to new ideas – this is one of those posts! I’m going to have to play with this…

Thanks again!

Would you be willing to share the sketchup? The overall design is exactly what I would like to do, but have difficulties with sketchup

Awesome design and burn finish technic – I will have to look closely this Japanese burning technic. I like that flooring pattern.

What’s the procedure on assembly & finishing? Do you burn the wood, cut the tenons, assemble, then oil?

would you be willing to share your sketchup file for the bed Mike? I’ve been trying to design something similar, but have not been happy with my mounting and connecting for the drawer boxes. would be interested in seeing someone else’s workaround for this size and style bed frame
