Beatles Scrollwork & Custom Walnut Frame

First, let me state that I am a HUGE Beatles Fan – with that said, when I saw this plan on the web I just knew I had to give it a try.

I also wanted to see how it would be to make my own hardwood “canvas” on which to do the scrollwork. I found some really dry, nicely figured cherry and slabbed it down to around 1/4” with my bandsaw. I let my planer finish the surface down to 1/8” and started to work on the pattern.

Now let me say that I will NEVER again use solid cherry to do scroll work! It is the most brittle, unforgiving wood I have ever worked with! However, I managed to take my time and this is the result – the Fab Four in all their Glory!

After spending all that time cutting I just had to have a proper frame to display them in so I used some nicely figured walnut and Sam Maloof’s Poly-Oil Blend to bring out the awesome grain pattern in the wood.

I can’t wait for the cherry to oxidize and see what the “finished” colors turn out to be – should be even better I hope!

I will most certainly do more scrollwork as I find it very relaxing, but next time I think I’ll still to plywood! ;-)
