Locker shelves for miniature NFL jerseys and helmets

For my first LumberJocks project, I thought I’d show off my most recent completed project (at least, my most recent complete project that wasn’t built for my shop!). It’s also the first project I was ever paid for. Were they ripped off? You be the judge!

My cousin’s wife asked me for a set of shelves to display a set of mini NFL jerseys and helmets. They’ve had them for a long time and had even gone so far as to buy the wood for the project (red oak), but it had stalled out. She wanted it to look sort of like lockers without doors. We discussed some options, and she settled on two separate shelves, each with two rows of eight lockers. I did a mock up in Sketchup and sent it to her for her approval. She sent me the lumber she’d purchased, and it was time to start making sawdust.

This project had a lot of dados and a lot of lap joints. To make sure I had a fighting chance of getting it assembled, each shelf started out as a frame with two cross members dividing the it into four quadrants. After the frame was glued up, the lockers for each quadrant were each inserted separately, three-lockers-/one-quadrant- at a time.

The third picture shows the shelves as I delivered them. They wanted them unfinished, because they wanted to install the hooks for the hangers themselves (they wanted to be sure the hooks they chose would fit the jersey hangers). They finished it with Watco danish oil and installed the hardware.

They were kind enough to send me some pictures after they got the shelves hung. It’s gratifying to see my work in someone else’s house!

I didn’t know mini jerseys and helmets even existed ( not a sports fan). The shelves look fantastic. You’re right, that’s a lot of dodos and lap joints. Great job, I’d say you’re off and running. Thanks for sharing.

That’s a really cool little project. Ive got a request however. Please ask your cousin’s wife to remove larry johnsons jersey from the KC Chiefs locker. Ill gladly replace it with Jamaal Charles or Priest Holmes.

chrisstef, I thought the same thing when I saw the pictures. ;) But it does give you an idea of how long it had been stalled out!

What a clever and well executed project. I remember my son was in elementary school when Burger King came out with these in 2007. Only a few of those players are still active.

Thanks for sharing.

You have done yourself proud Sir. Excellent job. You do realize that people will be calling you for other jobs now.

I will have to ask my cousin! I’ll update when I find out, assuming she remembers. :)
