Bunk-bed Ladder

I realize compared to many of the projects showcased on this website, my little ladder pails. But I don’t mind. Due to a series of unfortunate events, we had to move in mid-2015, I closed up the shop, and we now re-settled back into a new home.

This is my first real bit of wood working in 1-1/2 years and I gotta tell you that it feels GREAT to be back in the shop. The smell of the dust, the hum of the saw. I couldn’t be happier to have my shop back up and running.

So, this is a ladder for my son’s bunk bed. If anyone has ever lived in a City apartment, you’ve probably run across this bunk bed issue. The ladder is on the side of the bed, but the room is not wide enough to get to the ladder. So, I built this one on the face of the bed.

It’s made out of poplar, nice cheap hardwood. My son wanted to paint it green, so I didn’t focus too much on fine woodworking details. I am, at this point, dusting off my skils, and ran into a couple of pit falls.

I cut my pieces and rounded all the edges before assembly. Woops! Makes for an ugly joint at the ladder rung. Lesson learned for my next project. Doesn’t matter though – wife and boy love the ladder and it’s already taken a ton of kid abuse with no problem.

Thanks for having a look.
