I wanted to make something for the boys I teach at church, so I decided to try and make some tops. This is one of my first projects on a lathe. I made 10 of them out of some walnut and maple I had in the shop. Being short on time, I just finished with some paste wax. I tried to make them all a little different. Most of them worked pretty well, but a few would not stay up. So, I put the ones that did not work well back on the lathe and took a little more wood off the top spindle. This seemed to work and now all tops spin and stay up for a while. Best of all, the boys loved them!

Nice tops Jeff. I noted that Jim Jakosh’s Yin/Yang design would work excellently for your tops:
